Shrine of Hazrat Ali

The Shrine of Hazrat Ali, also known as the Blue Mosque, is a mosque in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan. It is one of the reputed burial places of Hazrat Ali, cousin and son-in law of Muhammad. The mazar is the building which gives the city in which it is located, Mazar-i-Sharif (meaning "Tomb of the Exalted") its name.

Eucratideia

Eucratideia was an ancient town in Bactria mentioned by a few ancient writers. It was most likely a foundation of Eucratides I who is the more important ruler of the Greco-Bactrian Kingdom with the name Eucratides. Not much is known about this city and it might be just a renaming of an already existing town rather than a new foundation. Renaming of cities was a common practise in the ancient world.

2011 Mazar-i-Sharif attack

The 2011 Mazar-i-Sharif attack occurred on April 1, 2011 when a group of demonstrators attacked the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) compound in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan, killing seven foreigners, including three United Nations staff members and four Nepalese guards. Additionally, five protesters died in the violence.

1998 Iranian diplomats murder in Afghanistan

The 1998 Iranian diplomats assassination in Afghanistan refers to the siege of the Iranian consulate in Mazari Sharif, Afghanistan during the capture of Mazari Sharif by Taliban forces on August 8, 1998. Initially the death of 8 Iranian diplomats was reported, but later two other diplomats and a journalist were also confirmed dead. The killings of the diplomats had however been carried out by Sipah-e-Sahaba, a Pakistani Sunni group with close ties to the Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence.

Qala-i-Jangi

Qala-i-Jangi is a 19th century fortress located near Mazar-i-Sharif in northern Afghanistan. It is known for being the site of a bloody 2001 Taliban uprising named the Battle of Qala-i-Jangi, in which at least 470 people were killed including CIA agent Johnny "Mike" Spann. It served as Northern Alliance General Abdul Rashid Dostum's military garrison during the opening stages of the War in Afghanistan (2001–present).
