Lake Eucumbene

Lake Eucumbene (pronounced you-come-been) is a man-made lake on the Eucumbene River in the Snowy Mountains of Southern New South Wales in Australia. The lake was created by the damming of the river as part of the Snowy Mountains Scheme. The dam was built between 1956 and 1958. It is the largest storage lake in the Snowy Mountains Scheme, with a capacity some 9 times the volume of Sydney Harbour. Much of the lake is bordered by the Kosciuszko National Park.

Eucumbene River

The Eucumbene River rises in the northern part of the Kosciuszko National Park in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales, Australia, and flows south. Its flow is blocked by Eucumbene Dam, the largest dam in the Snowy Mountains Scheme. The river valley continues from the dam wall to its junction with the Snowy River which is now part of Lake Jindabyne. In Spring the source of water for this river is snow melt around Kiandra - an abandoned gold mining town from the 19th century.
