Bakers Creek, Queensland

Bakers Creek is a small town in Queensland, approximately 8 kilometres south of Mackay on the Bruce Highway. Its main industry is a large meat processing plant operated by Thomas Borthwick & Sons (Aust) Pty Ltd. The Bakers Creek watercourse runs through the township. At the 2006 census, Bakers Creek had a population of 770. In 1943, a USAAF aircraft crashed in the locality, killing 40 of the 41 people on board. The crash is Australia's worst aviation disaster by death toll.

Bakers Creek air crash

The Bakers Creek air crash was an aviation disaster which occurred on 14 June 1943, when a United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress aircraft crashed at Bakers Creek, Queensland. The aircraft took off from Mackay and crashed approximately 8 kilometres south of the airfield. Forty of the 41 military service personnel on board were killed.

Te Kowai, Queensland

Te Kowai is a suburb in the Mackay Regional Council in Queensland, Australia. Its population at the 2006 census was 666 people. The name of the suburb is derived from a former railway station, itself derived from a nearby sugar plantation named after a New Zealand tree, kowhai. The name was shortened and the Māori definite article "Te" added. A sugar mill was established in the area in 1874 and operated until 1894 when it amalgamated with the Palms Mill.

Walkerston, Queensland

Walkerston is a town in central Queensland, Australia. The town is situated on the Peak Downs Highway 14 kilometres south-west of Mackay. Walkerston straddles Bakers Creek for about 3 kilometres . At the 2006 census, Walkerston had a population of 2,563. The town boasts two primary schools, a post office, three bars (including a sports club), and a supermarket. It is also the hometown of the Buddhist author Angulimalo. The railway reached Walkerston from Paget on 10 August 1885.
