Shire of Warroo

The Shire of Warroo was a local government area in the Darling Downs region of Queensland, Australia. In March 2008, it became part of the new Maranoa Regional Council. The administrative centre and only major town in the shire is Surat. The Shire was established on 11 November 1879.

Surat, Queensland

Surat is a small rural town on the Balonne River, approximately 75 kilometres south of Roma on the Carnarvon Highway in South West Queensland. It is 450 kilometres west of Brisbane. At the 2006 census, Surat had a population of 436. The district was first mapped by Surveyor-General Sir Thomas Mitchell in 1846. By the end of the 1849s pastoralists had penetrated the area, and in 1849 Mitchell directed a surveyor, Burrowes, to select a township site on the Balonne River.

Bungil Creek

The Bungil Creek has its headwaters north of Roma, Queensland, Australia. The creek runs through the town of Roma and joins the Balonne River 7 kilometres west of Surat. It then joins the Barwon River, then the Darling River and into the Murray River. The creek is normally a trickle but with a 710 km² catchment it can turn into a raging river after heavy rain.
