Armstrong, Victoria

Armstrong (also known as Armstrongs) is a town in Victoria, Australia, located on the Western Highway, north of Ararat, in the local government area of Rural City of Ararat. The town began as a gold-mining settlement, with a Post Office (Armstrong's) opening on 1 January 1859, and had a peak population of 516. The Melbourne to Adelaide railway passes through the town.

J Ward

J Ward was an Australian prison used to house the criminally insane, located in Ararat, Victoria, Australia. The buildings are built out of blue stone. J Ward is now a museum open to the public. Tours are run every day except on public holidays at 11 am, 12 pm, 1pm & 2pm. Other notes about J Ward include the amazing art work done by prisoners on the walls out side in their open area, the way this place makes you still imagine it being operated, and the thought to detail is amazing.

Aradale Mental Hospital

Aradale Mental Hospital was an Australian psychiatric hospital, located in Ararat, a rural city in Victoria, Australia. Originally known as Ararat Lunatic Asylum, Aradale and its two sister asylums at Kew and Beechworth were commissioned to accommodate the growing number of 'lunatics' in the colony of Victoria. Construction began in 1864, and the guardhouses are listed as being built in 1866 though the list of patients extends as far back as the year before (1865).

City of Ararat

The City of Ararat was a local government area about 200 kilometres west-northwest of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. It existed from 1858 until 1994. Headquartered in Ararat, Victoria, the council had jurisdiction over an area of 19.09 square kilometres and by 1992 a population of 8,070 people. It was surrounded by the separate and largely rural Shire of Ararat.

Ararat, Victoria

Ararat is a small city in south-west Victoria, Australia, about 205 kilometres west of Melbourne, on the Western Highway on the eastern slopes of the Ararat Hills and Cemetery Creek valley between Victoria's Western District and the Wimmera. Its urban population according to the 2011 census was 7,024. It is the largest settlement in the Rural City of Ararat local government area and is the administrative centre.
