Nicholson, Victoria

Nicholson is a small town in East Gippsland, Victoria, Australia, 295 km east of the state capital Melbourne. It is situated between the larger towns of Bairnsdale and Lakes Entrance. At the 2006 census, Nicholson and surrounds had a population of 1,504. Nicholson is located on the Princes Highway and lies on the banks of the Nicholson River. Nicholson Post Office opened on 1 August 1885.

Nicholson railway station

Nicholson Station was opened on Monday 10 April 1916 as part of the Orbost railway line and closed on Monday 24 August 1987. Little trace remains of the station site, however a station name board exists at the site as part of the East Gippsland Rail Trail, which follows the route of the former rail line.

Mitchell River (Victoria)

The Mitchell River is the largest unregulated river in Victoria, Australia and provides a unique example of riparian ecology. Tributaries include the Crooked, Dargo, Wentworth, Wonnangatta, and Wongungarra Rivers, which are surrounded by dense native forest on the steep mountains of the Victorian Alps. The river flows south and enters Lake King, one of the Gippsland Lakes. The river was named by Angus McMillan in 1839 after Sir Thomas Mitchell, explorer and Surveyor General of New South Wales.

Johnsonville, Victoria

Johnsonville is a town in the East Gippsland region of Victoria, Australia. It is a small town considered part of the 'twin rivers' of the Tambo and Nicholson Rivers. At the 2006 census, Johnsonville had a population of 586. The Johnsonville Post Office opened on 16 September 1886. Johnsonville is a highly tourist-based area that hosts the Twin Rivers Bream Classic - an annual fishing event.

Bumberrah railway station

Bumberrah Railway Station and siding was opened on Monday 10 April 1916 as part of the Orbost railway line. It was closed in 1977, with the last train passing the site in 1987. The former station grounds have been preserved, with a diversity of native flora on the site remaining as a result of it being protected from grazing stock during its time in service to the railways.
