Wave Rock

Wave Rock is a natural rock formation that is shaped like a tall breaking ocean wave. The "wave" is about 14 m (47 ft) high and around 110 m (350 ft) long. It forms the north side of a solitary hill, which is known as "Hyden Rock. " This hill, which is a granite inselberg, lies about 3 km east of the small town of Hyden and 296 km east-southeast of Perth, Western Australia. Wave Rock and Hyden Rock are part of a 160-hectare nature reserve, Hyden Wildlife Park.

Hyden, Western Australia

The town of Hyden is located 292 km east-southeast of Perth, Western Australia in the Shire of Kondinin. Hyden is home to Wave Rock and Mulka's Cave, both popular local tourist attractions. The land in the surrounding area was opened up for agriculture in the 1920s. A railway was built between Kondinin and Hyden Rock in 1930. The townsite was gazetted in 1932 following demand for land around the railway terminus. The first wheat crop was harvested in Hyden in 1927.

Hippos Yawn

Hippos Yawn is a rock near Wave Rock in Western Australia. The rock's resemblance to a yawning hippopotamus led to its name. It is about 12.6 meters tall.

Hyden Humps Dam

Hyden Humps Dam is situated approximately twenty kilometres north of Hyden, Western Australia. The dam is filled with rainwater runoff which is channeled off the Humps mountain. The water source is now only used as a backup supply after the completion of the Great Southern scheme where water is piped through the wheatbelt region from the Harris River Dam.

Karlgarin, Western Australia

Karlgarin is a town located 321 kilometres south-east of Perth in the eastern Wheatbelt region of Western Australia. Th first European to visit the area was Surveyor General John Septimus Roe who passed through in 1848. He recorded the name "Carlgarin" as the name of a nearby hill. Karlgarin is an Aboriginal word that is thought to mean "place of fire". Karlgarin was selected as a soldier settlement site and a declaration of a townsite was sought in 1924.
