1762 Arakan earthquake
The 1762 Arakan earthquake occurred at about 17:00 local time on 2 April, with an epicentre somewhere on the coast from Chittagong to Arakan in modern Burma. It had an estimated magnitude of as high as 8.8 on the moment magnitude scale and a maximum estimated intensity of XI (Extreme) on the Mercalli intensity scale. It triggered a local tsunami in the Bay of Bengal and caused at least 200 deaths. The earthquake was associated with major areas of both uplift and subsidence.

It is named after Cox's Bazar, which is one of the world's longest natural sea beaches (120 kilometres including mud flats). It is located 150 kilometres south of Chittagong. Cox's Bazar is also known by the name Panowa ("yellow flower"). Another old name was Palongkee.

It is located 150 km south of the industrial port Chittagong. Cox’s Bazar is also known by the name "Panowa", whose literal translation means "yellow flower. " Its other old name was "Palongkee".
