Putagán, Chile

Putagán is a village in the Chilean municipality of Villa Alegre, Province of Linares, Maule Region. Pop. 622. Altitude (meters)\t112. Time zone (est) UTC-4(-3DT). Located 292 Kilometers (182 miles) south from Santiago. Bases its economy on agricultural activities like vineyards, rice, corn plantations and lately some kind of berries for the European markets. Putagán is one of the oldest Spanish settlements in the current Maule Region.

Putagán River

Putagán is a river in Linares Province, Maule Region of Chile. The Putagán is born in the foothills of the Andes and, flowing from east to west, passes south of the village of the same name. Along its course, the river contributes to form the northern border of the municipality of Linares with the following municipalities (from east to west): Colbún, Yerbas Buenas and Villa Alegre, before joining the Loncomilla river.

Battle of the Maule

The Battle of the Maule was fought between the Mapuche people and the Inca Empire in what is now Chile. The three-day battle, which is generally believed to have occurred in the reign of Tupac Inca Yupanqui (1471-93 CE), marked the end of the Incas' southward expansion. In a six-year campaign with an army that eventually rose to 50,000 men, the Inca general Sinchiruca had subdued the regions of northern Chile, Copiapó, Coquimbo, Aconcagua and the Maipo Valley around what is now Santiago.

Abránquil

Abránquil is a Chilean village located in current Linares Province, near Yerbas Buenas. It is located in the riverside of the creek also named Abránquil. The old parish of Santa Cruz de Abránquil was formerly located here, but it was moved to Yerbas Buenas. Its name comes from Mapudungun av and ránquyl, meaning extremity, end of the reed.
