Acandí

Acandí is a town of Colombia situated at the northern end of the department of Chocó, northwest of Colombia, the Caribbean Sea. Located 366 km from the provincial capital, Quibdó. Its average temperature is 28 degrees Celsius. It was founded around the year 1887, and it became a municipality in 1905, previously was part of Turbo. Acandí name is a corruption of the indigenous voice "Acanti" which means "River of Stone", a voice that was changed by the people who arrived by the name it has now.

Alcides Fernández Airport

Alcides Fernández Airport is a commercial airport on the Caribbean coast of Colombia serving to town of Acandí. The airport is considered by residents of the town of Acandí to be an important link between that community and the rest of Colombia as well as neighboring Panama. The airport was closed for some time during the early 2000s, as tourism to Acandí suffered a downturn.

Gulf of Urabá

The Gulf of Urabá is a gulf on the northern coast of South America. It is part of the Caribbean Sea. It is a long, narrow inlet located on the coast of Colombia, close to the connection of the continent to the Isthmus of Panama. The town of Turbo, Colombia, lies at the southern end of the Gulf. The Atrato River flows into the Gulf of Urabá.

Santa María la Antigua del Darién

Santa María la Antigua del Darién was a Spanish colonial town founded in 1510 by Vasco Núñez de Balboa, located in present-day Colombia approximately 40 miles south of Acandí. It was the first city founded by conquistadors in mainland America. After Pascual de Andagoya, a Spanish-Basque conquistador under the direction of Panama governor Pedrarias Dávila, founded Panama City in 1519, Santa María la Antigua del Darién was abandoned and in 1524 was attacked and burned by the indigenous people.
