Upala (canton)

Upala is the name of the 13th canton in the province of Alajuela in Costa Rica. The canton covers an area of 1,580.67 square kilometres, and has a population of 40,767 (estimate as of 2003). The capital city of the canton is also called Upala. Upala Canton is bordered by Nicaragua on the north, the Río Las Haciendas on the northwest, Río Rito on the southeast, and the Cordillera de Guanacaste on the south.

Mogote de Bagaces

Mogote de Bagaces, also known as Guayabo de Bagaces, is a district in Costa Rica, located 23 km north of Bagaces, at the foot of the Miravalles Volcano. The economic activity of Guayabo is based on agriculture (kidney beans, onions, and sugarcane), and on livestock and dairy industry. Thanks to the energy-producing potential of the Miravalles, the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) started a geothermal project in the region, which brought employment opportunities.
