Hojancha (canton)

Hojancha is the 11th canton in the province of Guanacaste in Costa Rica. The canton covers an area of 261.42 km², and has a population of 6,960. Its capital city is also called Hojancha. The canton is in the midsection of the Nicoya Peninsula. It is relatively compact, with a single tentacle reaching south to encompass a small portion of the Pacific coastline from Playa Carrillo southward to the mouth of the Río Ora.

Nicoya Peninsula

The Nicoya Peninsula (Spanish: Península de Nicoya) is a peninsula on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. It is divided into two provinces: Guanacaste Province in the north, and the Puntarenas Province in the south. It varies from 19 to 37 miles wide and is approximately 75 miles long, forming the largest peninsula in the country. It is known for its beaches and is a popular tourist destination.

Nicoya (canton)

Nicoya is the second canton in the province of Guanacaste in Costa Rica. The canton covers an area of 1,333.68 km², and has a population of 44,834. Its capital city is also called Nicoya. The Río Tempisque establishes the northeast boundary of the canton, which cuts through the midsection of the Nicoya Peninsula, touching the Gulf of Nicoya on the east before curving southward to the Pacific Ocean.

2012 Costa Rica earthquake

The 2012 Costa Rica earthquake occurred at 08:42 local time on September 5, 2012. The epicenter of the 7.6 Mw earthquake was in the Nicoya Peninsula, 11 kilometers east-southeast of Nicoya. A tsunami warning was issued shortly afterwards, but later cancelled. Two people are known to have died, one from a heart attack and another, a construction worker, crushed by a collapsing wall.

Barra Honda National Park

Barra Honda National Park is a national park in the western part of Costa Rica, which forms part of the Tempisque Conservation Area about 12 km (7.46 mi) from the Tempisque River. It was created in 1974 to protect its famous cave systems, under the Barra Honda Peak which was formed when islets from the Miocene Era were raised above the plains of the river.
