Famagusta District

Famagusta District is one of the six districts of Cyprus. Its main town is the island's most important port, Famagusta. The city of Famagusta is currently controlled by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and functions as the administrative center of the Gazimağusa District of Northern Cyprus. A district administration in "exile" exists on the Republic of Cyprus controlled part of the island. This part of the district has a population of 37,738 inhabitants (2001).

Kantara Castle

Kantara Castle is the easternmost of the three castles situated on the Kyrenia mountain range in Cyprus. Lying at 630 metres above sea level, Kantara is well positioned to control the entrances to Karpass Peninsula and Mesaoria plain. The name 'Kantara' is believed to derive from the Arabic word qantara, which means a small bridge. It is believed that the Byzantines built the castle in the 10th century as a lookout post against raiding Arabs.

Salamis, Cyprus

Salamis is an ancient Greek city-state on the east coast of Cyprus, at the mouth of the river Pedieos, 6 km north of modern Famagusta. According to tradition the founder of Salamis was Teucer, son of Telamon, who could not return home after the Trojan war because he had failed to avenge his brother Ajax.

Maratha, Santalaris and Aloda massacre

Maratha, Santalaris and Aloda massacre (Turkish: Muratağa, Sandallar ve Atlılar katliamı), refers to the massacre of Turkish Cypriots by EOKA B on 14 August 1974 in the villages of Maratha, Santalaris and Aloda. 89 (or 84) people from Maratha and Santalaris were killed, and a further 37 people were killed in the village of Aloda. In total, 126 people were killed during the massacre.

Pedieos

The Pedieos (ancient Pediaios or Pediaeus or Pidkias) is the longest river in Cyprus. The river originates in the Troodos Mountains close to Machairas Monastery and flows northeast across the Mesaoria plains, through the capital city Nicosia. It then steers east, meeting the sea at Famagusta Bay close to the ancient Greek city of Salamis. The river has a total length of approximately 100 km. An 18 km stretch of the river banks, in and around Nicosia, has been turned into pedestrian walkways.
