Mendefera

Mendefera, formerly Adi Ugri, is the capital city of the Debub Region of Eritrea. The name Mendefera derives from the high hill in the center of the city and is a source of pride to Eritreans. It means 'no one dared' and is a reminder of the fierce resistance put up by the local people to the Italian colonialism.

Geography of Eritrea

Eritrea is located in the Horn of Africa and is bordered on the northeast and east by the Red Sea, on the west and northwest by Sudan, on the south by Ethiopia, and on the southeast by Djibouti. The country has a high central plateau that varies from 1,800 to 3,000 meters (to ft) above sea level. A coastal plain, western lowlands, and some 350 islands comprise the remainder of Eritrea's land mass. Eritrea has no year-round rivers.

Eritrean–Ethiopian War

The Eritrean–Ethiopian War took place from May 1998 to June 2000 between Ethiopia and Eritrea, forming one of the conflicts in the Horn of Africa. Eritrea one of the world's poorest countries, and Ethiopia one of the oldest—spent hundreds of millions of dollars on the war, and suffered tens of thousands of casualties as a direct consequence of the conflict, which resulted in minor border changes.
