Tartu Offensive

The Tartu Offensive Operation (Russian: Тартуская наступательная операция), also known as the Battle of Tartu and the Battle of Emajõgi was a campaign fought over southeastern Estonia in 1944. It took place on the Eastern Front during World War II between the Soviet 3rd Baltic Front and parts of the German Army Group North. The Soviet tactical aim was to defeat the 18th Army and to capture the city of Tartu. The strategic goal was a quick occupation of Estonia.

The area of Tartu County is 2,992.74 km², which covers 6.9% of the territory of Estonia. 150,535 people live in Tartu County – constituting 11.2% of the total population in Estonia (as of January 2011). The city of Tartu is the centre of the county located at a distance of 186 km from Tallinn.
