Piikkiö

Piikkiö, is a former municipality of Finland. Piikkiö was consolidated with Kaarina on January 1, 2009. It is located in the province of Western Finland and is part of the Finland Proper region. The municipality had a population of 6,836 (2004-12-31) and covered an area of 90.35 km² (excluding sea) of which 0.07 km² is inland water. The population density was 75.72 inhabitants per km². The municipality was almost unilingually Finnish.

Paimio Sanatorium

Paimio Sanatorium is a former tuberculosis sanatorium in Paimio, Finland Proper, designed by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. The building was completed in 1932, and soon after received critical acclaim both in Finland and abroad. The building served exclusively as a tuberculosis sanatorium until the early 1960s, when it was converted into a general hospital. Today the building is part of the Turku University Hospital. The sanatorium was nominated to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Littoinen

Littoinen is a village in south-western Finland, centred around Lake Littoinen. The village is shared between the town of Kaarina and the municipality of Lieto, and it borders the regional centre of Turku. It started growing after the founding of a broadcloth factory by Lake Littoinen in 1739, and the railway connection built in 1899 increased its growth.

Old Castle of Lieto

Old Castle of Lieto is a formerly fortified hill in Lieto, Finland. The original name of the castle is not known. According to excavations, the castle has been in use in the Late Bronze Age (1500–500 BCE), in Middle Iron Age (500–700 CE, contested) and in the Middle Ages up to the end of the 14th century, when it was replaced by the "new castle" in Turku harbour. It probably served as the first Swedish fortress in Finland from the mid-13th century onwards after the Second Swedish Crusade.

Varsinais-Suomi

Varsinais-Suomi (sometimes referred to as Southwest Finland; Finnish: Varsinais-Suomi, Swedish: Egentliga Finland) is the region in south-western Finland that borders the regions of Satakunta, Tavastia Proper, Åland and Uusimaa. Its capital and biggest city is Turku with 177,000 inhabitants, which was also the capital of Finland from its establishment around the 13th century until 1812.
