Lafayette transmitter

Lafayette transmitter was a large facility used for transatlantic VLF-transmission, located at Marcheprime, Aquitaine, France. The Lafayette transmitter used an antenna, which was carried by eight free-standing lattice towers (each 250 metres tall) with triangular cross-sections, which were the second tallest free-standing towers in France. In 1944 the installations of Lafayette transmitter were destroyed by retreating German troops. The last of the towers were demolished in 1953.

CEA Cesta

CEA/Cesta or simply Cesta (French: Centre d'études scientifiques et techniques d'Aquitaine; English: Center for scientific and technical study of Aquitaine) is a French research facility (CEA, Direction of Military Applications) dedicated to the design of nuclear weapons. The center was established in 1965 on the commune of Le Barp between Bordeaux and Arcachon.

Laser Mégajoule

Laser Mégajoule (LMJ) is an experimental inertial confinement fusion (ICF) device being built near Bordeaux, in France by the French nuclear science directorate, CEA. Laser Mégajoule plans to deliver about 1.8 MJ of laser energy to its targets, making it about as powerful as its US counterpart, the National Ignition Facility (NIF). Laser Mégajoule is the largest ICF experiment to be built outside the US, where ICF research has been strongly related to nuclear weapons research.

Leyre (river)

The Eyre is a coastal river that flows through the Moors of Gascony, in Aquitaine, Southwest France. The river is generally presented as the confluence of: the Grande Leyre (Large Leyre), its principal course, upstream from Moustey, the Petite Leyre (Small Leyre), its main tributary. Note that Leyre is a variant of the name Eyre, affected by an agglutination of the Romance article.

Bordeaux-Mérignac Air Base

Bordeaux-Mérignac Air Base is a former (1951–1958) United States Air Force base in France. It is located in the Gironde département, 6 miles west of the city of Bordeaux. During the early years of the Cold War, Bordeaux-Mérignac was a front-line base for the United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE).
