Shida Kartli

Shida Kartli is a region in Georgia. It consists of the following districts: Gori, Kaspi, Kareli, Java, Khashuri. The northern part of the region, namely Java, and northern territories of Kareli and Gori, (total area of 1,393 km²) is controlled by the authorities of the self-proclaimed republic of South Ossetia since 1992.

Variani

Variani is a village in the Gori District of Shida Kartli, about 12 kilometres from Gori. As of 2008, it had a population of 1,500. Variani is best known for being the birthplace of Iakob Gogebashvili and the location of the Iakob Gogebashvili House Museum, being a border village to the South Ossetia disputed territory, and being occupied by Russian forces in the 2008 South Ossetia war until 8 October 2008.

Tskhinvali

Tskhinvali, is the capital of South Ossetia, a disputed region which has been recognised as an independent Republic by Russia and another four UN members. South Ossetia is a de facto independent state that controls its claimed territory, in part with the support of Russian troops. Despite this, it is regarded by Georgia and all other UN member states as a region within Georgian sovereign territory.
