Wolfenstein (rock)

The Wolfenstein is an isolated rock formation, located between Tirschenreuth and Hohenwald in Bavaria. Due to erosion, the granite blocks appear to look like a pile of bags.

Upper Palatinate Tower

The Upper Palatinate Tower is an observation tower on the 946 metres high Platte mountain, the highest peak in the Steinwald and in Northern Upper Palatinate in southern Germany. The first solid observation tower was built in 1971/72 by the Steinwald Nature Park Authority from Steinwald spruce trees. Due to dilapidation it had to be demolished on 1 April 1998. The engineer, Ferdinand Lehner, from Tirschenreuth was then given the contract to design and build a new tower.

Steinwald

The Steinwald is a mountain range up to 946 m above sea level in southern Germany and, at the same time, a nature park (Steinwald Nature Park) founded in 1970 with an area of 246 square kilometres in the province of Upper Palatinate, in North Bavaria.

Tirschenreuth (district)

Tirschenreuth is a Kreis (district) in the northeastern part of Bavaria, Germany. Neighboring districts are (from the south, clockwise) Neustadt (Waldnaab), Bayreuth and Wunsiedel. To the east are the Czech districts of Plzeň and Karlovy Vary.

Flossenbürg concentration camp

Konzentrationslager Flossenbürg was a Nazi concentration camp built in May 1938 by the Schutzstaffel (SS) Economic-Administrative Main Office at Flossenbürg, in the Upper Palatinate region of Bavaria, Germany, near the border with Czechoslovakia. Until its liberation in April 1945, more than 96,000 prisoners passed through the camp. About 30,000 died there.
