In earlier times it was a city in the Pisatis district. Amphidolis is mentioned by Strabo in his Geographica as a market town near the town Alesiaeum (formerly Aleisium). People from Amphidolis took part in the Battle of Nemea (394 BCE) as slingers. They also served in the Trojan War.
