Zeelandia, Guyana

Zeelandia, a community in the Essequibo Islands-West Demerara region of Guyana, is one of many villages and plantations on Wakenaam, the most developed of the Essequibo River islands. Located at the extreme northern end of the island facing the Atlantic Ocean, Zeelandia is a fishing village.

Essequibo River

The Esequibo River is the largest river in Guyana,and the largest river between the Orinoco and Amazon. Rising in the Acarai Mountains near the Brazil-Guyana-Venezuela border, the Essequibo flows to the north for 1,010 km through forest and savanna into the Atlantic Ocean.

Essequibo (colony)

Essequibo was a Dutch colony on the Essequibo River in the Guiana region on the north coast of South America from 1616 to 1814. The colony formed a part of the colonies that are known under the collective name of Dutch Guiana.

Wakenaam

Wakenaam is an island of about 17.5 square miles at the mouth of the Essequibo River of Guyana. It was settled at one time by the Dutch in the 18th Century; the name Wakenaam is Dutch meaning "waiting for a name". The island, like most other islands in the Essequibo River in Guyana, is characterized by green vegetation, blue skies and cool breeze from the Atlantic.

Adventure, Guyana

Adventure is a village located in the Pomeroon-Supenaam Region of Guyana, on the Atlantic coast, at sea level, 1 mile south of Onderneeming. It is a riverain settlement at the mouth of the Essequibo River, and is linked to Wakenaam and Parika by the terminal of ferry service. It is connected by road to the West Coast of Demerara, and to the city of Georgetown via the Demerara Harbour Bridge. It has a night spot, bar and hotel for passengers.
