Eastern Region is a region in eastern Iceland. Its area is 22,721 km² and its population (2007) is 15,300. The biggest town in the region is Egilsstaðir, with a population of 2,300. The oldest municipality is Seyðisfjörður, established in 1895, with a population of 706 in 2009. The only car- and passenger ferry that sails between Iceland and the European continent calls at Seydisfjörður once a week year round.
Egilsstaðir is a town in east Iceland on the banks of Lagarfljót river. It is part of the municipality of Fljótsdalshérað, the county seat of Norður-Múlasýsla and the largest settlement of the Austurland region with, as of 2011, a population of 2,257 inhabitants.

Eiðar longwave transmitter is a facility of the Icelandic Broadcasting Company used for longwave broadcasting on 207 kHz with a power of 100 kW. Eiðar longwave transmitter situated at Eiðar near Egilsstaðir uses as antenna an omnidirectional aerial in form of a steel lattice mast radiator insulated against ground with a height of 220 metres. Originally a taller mast was planned, but this was impossible because of flight safety reasons.

Lagarfljót (also called Lögurinn) is a lake situated in the east of Iceland near Egilsstaðir. Its surface measures 53 square kilometres and it is 25 kilometres long; its greatest width is 2.5 km and its greatest depth 112 m . The River Lagarfljót flows through this lake. The biggest forest in Iceland, Hallormsstaðarskógur is to be found near the lake as well as a nice waterfall, Hengifoss. Hengifoss, at 118 m, is one of the tallest waterfalls in the country.
