Just after takeoff from Keflavik International, we flew past the eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull Volcano. You could see the pillar of ash almost right after take off

Interesting facts about this location


Seljalandsfoss is one of the most famous waterfalls of Iceland. It is very picturesque and therefore its photo can be found in many books and calendars. It was a waypoint during the first leg of The Amazing Race 6. Seljalandsfoss is situated in between Selfoss and Skógafoss at the road crossing of Route 1 (the Ring Road) with the track going into Þórsmörk. This waterfall of the river Seljalandsá drops 60 metres over the cliffs of the former coastline. It is possible to go behind the waterfall.

Framhaldsskólinn í Vestmannaeyjum

Framhaldsskólinn í Vestmannaeyjum, the comprehensive secondary school of Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland, was founded 1979 when the mechanical engineering, common trades (is. iðnskóli) and the higher education department of the secondary school merged into one. Then in 1997, it also took over the school of maritime navigation.

Hvolsvöllur is a small town in the south of Iceland about 106 km to the east of Reykjavík. It is situated in the inland swamps of Landeyjar, in the municipality of Rangárþing eystra and has, as of January 2011, 860 inhabitants.

Heimaey, literally Home Island, is an Icelandic island. At a size of 13.4 square kilometres, it is the largest island in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago, and the largest and most populated island off the Icelandic coast. Heimaey lies approximately 4 nautical miles off the south coast of Iceland. It is the only populated island of the Vestmannaeyjar islands, with a population of approximately 4,500.

Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands) is a town and archipelago off the south coast of Iceland. The largest island, Heimaey, has a population of 4,135. The other islands are uninhabited, though six have single hunting cabins. Vestmannaeyjar came to international attention in 1973 with the eruption of Eldfell volcano, which destroyed many buildings, and forced a months-long evacuation of the entire population to mainland Iceland.
