Gangaikonda Cholesvarar Temple

Gangaikonda Cholesvarar Temple is a Hindu temple in the Ariyalur District of Tamil Nadu, India. It was constructed by Rajendra Chola I to commemorate his victory over Mahipala of Bengal and forms a part of the Gangaikonda Cholapuram archaeological complex. The temple is dedicated to the god Shiva and is a copy of the Brihadeeswarar Temple at Thanjavur.

Gangaikonda Cholapuram

Gangaikonda Cholapuram was erected as the capital of the Cholas by Rajendra Chola I, the son and successor of Rajaraja Chola, the great Chola who conquered a large area in South India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Sumatra, Kadaram(Kedah in Malyasia) at the beginning of the 11th century C.E. It occupies an important place in the history of India. As the capital of the Cholas from about 1025 C.E.

Lower Anaicut

The Lower Anaicut or Anaikkarai is a dam and bridge built on the Kollidam (the northern tributary of Kaveri River) in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It was built in 1902 by the colonial administration of the Madras Presidency for irrigating the erstwhile South Arcot district. Stones from the ruins of Gangaikonda Cholapuram were used to construct the dam. It is situated about 70 miles below the Upper Anaicut and 20km from Kumbakonam.

Kadamangudi

Kadamangudi is a village in Thanjavur district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, situated along the river Kollidam. It consists of just over 100 families. It is surrounded by the river Kollidam which flows through here in north, village of Veerakkan in the south, village of Koothanur to the east and village of Ayyanallur to the west. It is situated 300 km from the state capital Chennai and 18 km from the nearest big town Kumbakonam.
