Mount Muria

Mount Muria or Gunung Muria is a dormant volcano on the north coast of Java, Indonesia. The area is notable for a number of reasons. It is the site of the grave of one of the Wali Sanga of Java - Sunan Muria - one of the Islamic Saints associated with the origins of Islam in Java. As a consequence the grave is part of the network of sites in Java considered to be sacred. It is also the area of the missionary origins of the Gereja Kristen Muria Indonesia Mennonite Christian group.

Demak Sultanate

The Demak Sultanate was Javanese Muslim state located on Java's north coast in Indonesia, at the site of the present day city of Demak. A port fief to the Majapahit kingdom thought to have been founded in the last quarter of the 15th century, it was influenced by Islam brought by Arab and Gujarat traders. The sultanate was the first Muslim state in Java, and once dominated most of the northern coast of Java and southern Sumatra.
