Willie Smits

Willie Smits is a trained forester, a microbiologist, conservationist, animal rights activist and social entrepreneur. He has lived in Borneo since 1985 and is an Indonesian citizen. While working as a forest researcher in East Kalimantan, Indonesia in 1989, Smits encountered a baby orangutan in a cage in a market, and later returned to find it abandoned on a rubbish heap. This was a turning-point in his career: taking the orangutan home, he nurtured it back to health.

Deforestation in Borneo

Borneo, the third largest island in the world, divided between Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei, was once covered with dense rainforests, but along with its tropical lowland and highland forests, there has been extensive deforestation in the past sixty years. In the 1980s and 1990s the forests of Borneo underwent a dramatic transition. They were levelled at a rate unparalleled in human history, burned, logged and cleared, and commonly replaced with agricultural land, or palm oil plantations.

Samboja Lestari

Samboja Lestari is an area of restored tropical rainforest near the city of Balikpapan in East Kalimantan, Borneo, Indonesia, created by the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOS) led by Dr Willie Smits, with the aim of providing a safe haven for rehabilitated orangutans while at the same time providing a source of income for local people.

Persiba Stadium

Persiba Stadium is a multi-use stadium in Balikpapan, Indonesia. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is used as the home stadium for Persiba Balikpapan. The stadium has a capacity of 10,000 people. In 2008, the stadium was renovated to accommodate Persiba Balikpapan to compete in Indonesia Super League and Copa Dji Sam Soe 2008/09 season. Lighting and spectators' seating were added as new features.
