Bekhme Dam

The Bekhme Dam is an unfinished multi-purpose rock-fill dam on the Great Zab 60 kilometres northeast of Arbil, Iraq. The main purposes of the dam are to produce 1500 MW of hydro-electricity and to manage flooding. If completed, the 230-metre high Bekhme Dam will be the largest in Iraq. Construction on the dam began in 1979 and was halted during the Iran-Iraq War. Construction started again in 1988 and halted in 1990, prior to the Gulf War.

Soran District

Soran (Kurdish: ﺱۆﺭاﻥ or Deverí Soran) is an area in Iraqi Kurdistan bordering Iran and Turkey. Its main city is also called Soran, although the town of Rawanduz is better known outside of the region . According to Kurdistan television, citing an official in the town of Soran, the population of the region is estimated to be over 400,000. Kurdish settlement in the region dates back prior to the establishment of the Sassanid empire.

Shanidar Cave

Shanidar Cave is an archaeological site in the Bradost mountain, Zagros Mountains in Erbil Governorate, Kurdistan Region, Iraq. The site is located in the valley of the Great Zab. It was excavated from 1957–1961 by Ralph Solecki and his team from Columbia University and yielded the first adult Neanderthal skeletons in Iraq, dating from 60–80,000 years BP.

Rowanduz

The town Rawandiz is a city of Iraq, which located in the sub-district of Soran, in the Arbil Governorate of Iraqi Kurdistan, close to the Iranian border. The population in 2003 was 95,089. The majority of people are now Kurds, with Assyrian, Shabak and Arab minorities.
