The Halabja poison gas attack, also known as Halabja massacre or Bloody Friday, was a genocidal massacre against the Kurdish people that took place on March 16, 1988, during the closing days of the Iran–Iraq War, when chemical weapons were used by the Iraqi government forces in the Kurdish town of Halabja in Southern Kurdistan.

Halabja

Halabja, is a Kurdish town in Northern Iraq, located about 150 miles north-east of Baghdad and 8–10 miles from the Iranian border. The town lies at the base of what is often referred to as the greater Hewraman region stretching across the Iran-Iraq border. The Kurds in the city of Halabja generally speak only the Sorani dialect of Kurdish, but some residents of the surrounding villages speak the Hewrami dialect.

Darbandikhan an town center and the judiciary in the province of Sulaimaniya, northern Iraq. It is situated within the area of autonomy for the Kurdistan region of Iraq, inhabited by the majority of Kurds. Darbandikhan is located close to Darbandikhan Lake, and on the border with Diyala Province.
