Battle of Nahrawan

The Battle of Nahrawan was a battle between Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (the 1st Shi'a Imam, and the fourth Sunni Caliph) and the Kharijites, near Nahrawan, twelve miles from Baghdad. After the unsatisfactory conclusion to the Battle of Siffin, Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib returned with his army back to Kufa on the 13th of Safar 37 A.H. (~30 July 657 C.E.). During the march, a group of 12,000 men kept themselves at a distance from the main part of the army.

2007 al-Askari Mosque bombing

The 2007 al-Askari Mosque bombing occurred on 13 June 2007 at around 9 a.m. local time at one of the holiest sites in Shia Islam, the al-Askari Mosque, and has been attributed to al-Qaeda in Iraq or the Iraqi Baath Party. While there were no injuries or deaths reported, the mosque's two ten story minarets were destroyed in the attacks. This was the second bombing of the mosque, with the first bombing occurring on 22 February 2006 and destroying the mosque's golden dome.
