Ferdinandea (Calabria)

Ferdinandea is an area of 3600 hectare in Serre Calabresi included in the territories of Bivongi, Stilo, Brognaturo, Mongiana and Serra San Bruno in the provinces of Reggio Calabria and Vibo Valentia. Ferdinandea is entirely covered by fir and beech woods. The name originates from King Ferdinand II of the Two Sicilies, who used the area for hunting after 1832.

The Province of Vibo Valentia (Italian: Provincia di Vibo Valentia) is a province in the Calabria region of Italy, set up by a national law of 6 March 1992 which came into effect on 1 January 1996, and formerly part of the Province of Catanzaro. Its capital is the city of Vibo Valentia and its vehicle licence plate code is VV. The Province has an area of 1,139 km² (7.6% of the total surface of Calabria), and a total population of 168,894. 1905 Calabria earthquake

Striking southern Italy on September 8, the 1905 Calabria earthquake killed between 557 and 5,000 people and damaged at least 14,000 houses in the epicentral area alone. The first major earthquake of the 20th century, it damaged parts of Lipari Island and Messina Province.
