Iwaki, Fukushima

Iwaki, Fukushima is a city located in the southern part of the Hamadōri coastal region of Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. A designated "core city", Iwaki is also one of the growing number of hiragana cities. Its area is 1,231.35 km², making it the 10th largest city in Japan (2010). Its estimated population as of May 2011 is 337,288. The present "Iwaki City" started as the merger of 14 municipalities on October 1, 1966.

April 2011 Fukushima earthquake

The April 2011 Fukushima earthquake (福島県浜通り地震, Fukushima-ken Hamadōri jishin, lit. "Fukushima Hamadōri earthquake") was a potent magnitude 7.1 Mw intraplate aftershock that occurred at 17:16 JST on Monday, 11 April 2011, in the Hamadōri region of Fukushima, Japan. With a shallow focus of 13 km (8 mi), the earthquake was centred inland about 36 km (22 mi) west of Iwaki, causing widespread strong to locally severe shaking.
