Amami Islands Botanical Garden

The Amami Islands Botanical Garden is a zoo and botanical garden located on the grounds of the Amami Cultural Foundation, Yanma 811-1, Sumiyo-cho, Amami, Kagoshima, Japan. It is open daily except Tuesdays and Wednesdays; an admission fee is charged. The garden contains a collection of more than 500 types of cactus and succulents, bananas, tropical fruit trees, and a greenhouse with begonias, calathea, heliconia, orchids, etc.

Amami Islands

The Amami Islands are a group of islands that is part of the Satsunan Islands, a group of islands in the Ryukyu Archipelago. They are part of Kagoshima Prefecture, in the Kyūshū region of Japan. They consist of: Amami Ōshima (奄美大島) Kikai-jima (喜界島) Kakeromajima (加計呂麻島) Yoroshima (与路島) Ukeshima (請島) Tokunoshima (徳之島) Okinoerabu-jima (沖永良島) Yoronjima (AKA Yorontō unofficially) (与論島) The name of Amami is probably cognate with Amamikiyo or Amamiko, a goddess often featured in Okinawan legends.

Amami Ōshima

is a semi-tropical island in the Amami Islands, which is part of the Ryukyu Archipelago in Japan. Ōshima literally means big island, and it is the largest of the Amami Islands. It lies roughly halfway between the islands of Okinawa and Kyūshū. Briefly part of the Ryūkyū Kingdom, in 1624 it was annexed by the daimyo of Satsuma. It also spent approximately seven years under American control following World War II.

Naze, Kagoshima

Naze, Kagoshima was a city located on Amami Ōshima in Kagoshima, Japan. On March 20, 2006 Naze was merged with the town of Kasari, and the village of Sumiyō, both from Ōshima District, to form the new city of Amami. As of 2003, the city had an estimated population of 41,778 and the density of 327.31 persons per km². The total area was 127.64 km². The city was founded on July 1, 1946.
