1792 Unzen earthquake and tsunami

1792 Unzen earthquake and tsunami was an earthquake resulting from the volcanic activities of Mount Unzen on 21 May. This caused the collapse of the southern flank of the Mayuyama dome in front of Mount Unzen, resulting in a tremendous tsunami, killing 15,000 people altogether. It was also called, Shimabara erupted, Higo affected (島原大変肥後迷惑), (Shimabara means the central mountain of the Shimabara Peninsula) since many people were killed by this tsunami in Higo.

Unzen, Nagasaki

Unzen, Nagasaki is a city in Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan, located on the northern tip of Shimabara Peninsula, facing Ariake Bay in the east and Mount Unzen to the south. Unzen city was formed on October 11, 2005 by a merger of the towns of Aino, Azuma, Chidiwa, Kunimi, Minamikushiyama, Mizuho and Obama, all from Minamitakaki District.

Konagai, Nagasaki

Konagai, Nagasaki was a town located in Kitatakaki District, Nagasaki, Japan. As of 2003, the town had an estimated population of 6,437 and a density of 208.12 persons per km². The total area was 30.93 km². On March 1, 2005 Konagai, along with the town of Tarami, from Nishisonogi District, and the towns of Iimori, Moriyama and Takaki, all from Kitatakaki District, was merged into the expanded city of Isahaya.

Ariake Sea

The Ariake Sea is a body of salt water surrounded by Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki, and Kumamoto Prefectures, all of which lie on the island of Kyūshū in Japan. It is the largest bay in Kyūshū. Its deepest point is only about 50 m deep, and extreme tides exceed 4 m. It is used for aquaculture, with nori being a major product. Various species of fauna, including mudskippers, pen shells (Atrina pectinata), and fiddler crabs, live in the Ariake Sea.
