Obama, Nagasaki

Obama, Nagasaki was the name of a town located in Minamitakaki District, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. On October 11, 2005 Obama was merged with the towns of Aino, Azuma, Chijiwa, Kunimi, Minamikushiyama and Mizuho, all from Minamitakaki District, to form the new city of Unzen. Located at the foot of Mount Unzen, the area is famous for volcanic hot springs named Obama Onsen and Unzen Onsen. As of 2003, the town had an estimated population of 10,836 and a density of 213.14 persons per km².

Obama Onsen

is an onsen, or hot spring resort, established in 713 and located in Obama, Unzen, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. It is known for having the hottest and most active springs in Japan, with some of them reaching 80-100°C and producing over 15,000 tons of hot water daily. The area was formerly part of Hizen Province. Its location near the sea shore allows one to see the sun setting, which makes it a popular location to visit in the evenings.

Shimabara Peninsula

Shimabara Peninsula is east of Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture, Kyūshū, Japan. On its north-eastern tip stands Shimabara City. It was also the site of the Shimabara Rebellion, a 1637-1638 peasant revolt led by Christians. This further reinforced distrust of Christians and foreigners by Shogun Iemitsu and contributed to the 1639 decision to isolate Japan from the outside world.

Unzen Ropeway

The Unzen Ropeway is the name of Japanese aerial lift line, as well as its operator. Opened in 1957, the line climbs Myōken Peak of Mount Unzen, Unzen, Nagasaki. It attracts the visitor with the view of the surrounding nature, especially azaleas in spring and autumn colors in autumn.

Hinoe Castle

Hinoe Castle is a castle located in Minamishimabara, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. The castle was originally built in the 13th century. It belonged to the Arima clan, and was the residence of the Christian daimyo. In 1637, during the Shimabara Rebellion, it was burned down by the forces of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The castle's ruins can still be seen.
