Interesting facts about this location

Izena Island

is located in the East China Sea, north-west of Okinawa Island in the southern Shimajiri District, in the Ryukyu Islands of Japan. During the Meiji period, it was part of the Okinawa Prefecture. The island has a diameter of about 5 kilometres and is surrounded by coral reefs, blue sea, and white beaches. The five villages of about equal size and population which are located on the island are Izena, Nakada, Shomi, Uchihana, and Jicchaku.

USS Emmons (DD-457)

USS Emmons (DD-457/DMS-22) was a Gleaves-class destroyer of the United States Navy, named for Rear Admiral George F. Emmons (1811–1884). Emmons was launched 23 August 1941 by Bath Iron Works Corp. , Bath, Me. , sponsored by Mrs. F.  E. Reacock, granddaughter of Rear Admiral Emmons; and commissioned 5 December 1941, Lieutenant Commander T.  C. Ragan in command. She was reclassified DMS-22 on 15 November 1944.

Ie Shima Airfield

Ie Shima Airfield is a gunnery and training facility, managed by the United States Marine Corps and a former World War II airfield complex on Ie Shima, an island located off the northwest coast of Okinawa Island in the East China Sea. The airfield was inactivated after 1946 and largely returned to Japanese control in 1972.
