This article describes the geography of the Republic of Kiribati. Kiribati consists of 32 atolls and one island scattered over all four hemispheres in an expanse of ocean equivalent in size to the continental United States. The islands lie roughly halfway between Hawaiʻi and Australia in the Micronesian region of the South Pacific. The three main island groupings are the Gilbert Islands, Phoenix Islands, and Line Islands.
Located at 1.34, 173.03 (Lat. / Lng.), less than 6 mi away.
Betio is an island and a town at the extreme southwest of South Tarawa in Kiribati. The main port of Tarawa Atoll is located there.
South Tarawa (in Gilbertese Tarawa Teinainano) is the capital and hub of the Republic of Kiribati and home to approximately half of Kiribati's total population. As at the 2010 Census its population was of 50,182 (including Betio). The South Tarawa population center consists of all the small islets from Betio in the West to Bonriki in the East, connected by the South Tarawa main road.
Tarawa is an atoll in the Republic of Kiribati, in the central Pacific Ocean. North Tarawa has much in common with other, more remote islands of the Gilberts group, while South Tarawa is the capital of Kiribati and home to over 50,000 people - half of the country's total population. The island is best known by outsiders as the site of the Battle of Tarawa during World War II.
Battle of Tarawa
The Battle of Tarawa (US code name Operation Galvanic) was a battle in the Pacific Theater of World War II, largely fought from November 20 to November 23, 1943. It was the first American offensive in the critical central Pacific region. It was also the first time in the war that the United States faced serious Japanese opposition to an amphibious landing. Previous landings met little or no initial resistance.
