Whakatane Airport

Whakatane Airport is an airport serving the township of Whakatane, New Zealand and surrounding tourist attractions. The "excitingly different" terminal building, was designed and built in the 1970s by Roger Walker. The airport's main movements include Eagle Airways/Air New Zealand Beech 1900D aircraft to Auckland and to Wellington. The airport also houses a flight school, agricultural aircraft and commercial helicopter operations.

1987 Edgecumbe earthquake

The Edgecumbe earthquake of 1987 was an earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale that struck the Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand on 2 March 1987 just after 1.42 pm, centred on the town of Edgecumbe. The earthquake was very shallow, being centred approximately 8 km from the Earth's surface. The earthquake was one of the most damaging New Zealand's North Island has experienced in recent decades, with approximately 50% of the houses in Edgecumbe being damaged by the quake.

Paroa, Bay of Plenty

Paroa is a rural locality situated near Whakatane in the Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand. The small, predominantly Māori community is located along State Highway 30, and contains a school and a sports rugby club.

Tarawera River

The Tarawera River is in the Bay of Plenty Region in the North Island of New Zealand. It flows from Lake Tarawera, northeastwards across the northern flanks of the active volcano Mount Tarawera, and past the town of Kawerau before turning north, reaching the Bay of Plenty six kilometres to the west of Edgecumbe. The Tarawera Falls on the river are considered to be quite spectacular.

Edgecumbe

Edgecumbe is a town in the Bay of Plenty of the North Island of New Zealand, 15 kilometres to the west of Whakatane and eight kilometres south of the Bay's coast. It is the main service town for the agricultural region surrounding the plains of the Rangitaiki River, which flows through the town. It has a population of approximately 1800, though that number is falling. State Highway 2 and the Taneatua Branch railway line (disused) pass through the town.
