Waitotara School

Waitotara School is a small state primary school situated in the rural village of Waitotara, located between Wanganui and Hawera, New Zealand on State Highway 3. The school sits on the banks of the Waitotara River, 47 km south of Ngamatapouri, and was fully refurbished after devastating floods in 2004. These floods destroyed much of the interior of the school buildings as well as furniture and equipment, while many homes in the small community of Waitotara were also badly damaged.

Whenuakura River

The Whenuakura River is a river of the Taranaki Region of New Zealand's North Island. It flows south from its origins northeast of Lake Rotorangi and reaches the coast five kilometres southeast of Patea.

Waitotara River

The Waitotara River in New Zealand's North Island stretches approximately 100km in length from its headwaters in the Matemateaonga Ranges to its mouth on the South Taranaki Bight. The river takes in significant tributaries such as the Ngutuwera, Makakaho, Pokeka, Omaru and Totara Streams.

Patea Freezing Works

The Patea Freezing Works was a meat-processing plant promoted by The Patea A&P Association in the town of Patea. The West Coast Meat and Produce Export Company was formed in August 1883 and operated a tinning plant and tallow factory in the area. Changes in technology saw the company change from canning to freezing in 1904. The Patea Freezing Company came into being in 1910. In 1933, a new Patea Freezing Company was formed and at times provided work for nearly 1000 workers during peak season.
