Jinotega Department

Jinotega is the second largest department in Nicaragua. It is bordered on the north by the country of Honduras. The departments surrounding it are, Matagalpa to the south, Zelaya to the east, and Estelí, Madriz, and Nueva Segovia. It covers an area of 9,755 km² and has a population of 297,300 (2005 census). The capital is the city of Jinotega.

Lake Apanás

Lake Apanás is a reservoir located in the north of Nicaragua. It is created by the dam on the Río Tuma to the north of Jinotega. The reservoir has an area of 51 square kilometers. It is a source of much of nation's hydropower for the Asturias hydroelectric station.

Matagalpa

Matagalpa is a city in Nicaragua, the capital of the department of Matagalpa. The city has a population of 109,100 (2005 census), while the population of the department is more than 480,000. Matagalpa is Nicaragua's sixth largest city and one of its most commercially active outside of Managua. Matagalpa is the second most important city in Nicaragua and is known as the "Pearl of the North" and "Land of Eternal Spring."
