Most of the population lives along the southern coast of the island, where the historic Øksnes Church is located. The administration for Øksnes was historically located on this island, but it was moved to Myre on the main island of Langøya.

The west coast of the outer part belongs to Bø municipality and the eastern coast of the outer part of the fjord belongs to Hadsel.
