Gheorghe Șincai National College (Romanian: Colegiul Naţional "Gheorghe Şincai") is a public day high school for grades 9 to 12 in Baia Mare, Romania, attended by some 900 pupils aged 14 to 19. Stephen's Tower is a tower located on Citadel Square in Baia Mare, Romania. Over 40 metres high and built in a neo-Gothic style, it is a symbol of the city. Eventually used for strategic observation and detecting fires, Stephen's Tower was initially a bell tower for Saint Stephen's church, built in 1347-76 as the only double-naved church in mediaeval northwest Transylvania.

Stadionul Viorel Mateianu is a multi-purpose stadium in Baia Mare. It is the home ground of FC Maramureş Universitar Baia Mare. It holds 15,500 people. It was built in the early 1950s. The stands used to be overcrowded during FC Baia Mare's golden era when between 20,000 and 25,000 people used to come and see the local team playing. Big names of European football, such as Real Madrid and Steaua Bucharest, played on this stadium in the past.

2000 Baia Mare cyanide spill
The 2000 Baia Mare cyanide spill was a leak of cyanide near Baia Mare, Romania, into the Someş River by the gold mining company Aurul, a joint-venture of the Australian company Esmeralda Exploration and the Romanian government. The polluted waters eventually reached the Tisza and then the Danube, killing large numbers of fish in Hungary and Yugoslavia. The spill has been called the worst environmental disaster in Europe since the Chernobyl disaster.

In 2011 the UNBM Senate voted to dissolve into the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca. The fusion process ended with the 2012 academic elections in the Technical University.
