Argun River (Caucasus)

The Argun River flows through the northern Caucasus, Georgia, and the Chechen Republic of Russia. It is an affluent of the Sunzha and lies within the river basin of the Terek. The river has its sources on the northern slopes of the Caucasus in Georgia. The Argun flows in western Chechnya through Itum-Kalinsky and Shatoysky Districts. This area was the first place where Chechens established themselves and many ruins of former villages built in the traditional style can still be seen.

Shali, Chechen Republic

Shali is a town and the administrative center of Shalinsky District of the Chechen Republic, Russia. Population: 47,708; 40,356; 24,985. On January 3, 1995, during the course of the First Chechen War, Shali was repeatedly bombed with cluster bombs by Russian jet aircraft.

Avtury

Avtury is a rural locality in Shalinsky District of the Chechen Republic, Russia, located on the Khulkhulau River, 6 kilometers east of Shali. Population: 14,988; 18,330. It was supposedly founded in the 14th century, soon after the area was abandoned by the Mongols and Tatars. During the Caucasian War, Avtury was a combat area between Imam Shamil and the Russian troops.

Khankala

Khankala is a settlement in Groznensky District of the Chechen Republic, Russia, located to the east of Grozny, the republic's capital. Population: 7,908. The settlement is the location of a Russian military base, the headquarters of the 42nd Motor Rifle Division, and an airstrip. It was the site of the Battle of Khankala in 1994.
