Battle of the Valerik River

The Battle of the Valerik River on July 11, 1840 was a battle of the Russian conquest of the Caucasus. It was fought about 30 km southwest of the fortress of Groznaya between forces of the Imperial Russian Army and North Caucasian mountaineers led by the naib (viceroy) Ahberdila Muhammad. It remains famous because of the poem "Valerik" by Mikhail Lermontov, a participant.

Roshni-Chu

Roshni-chu is a rural locality in Urus-Martanovsky District of the Chechen Republic, Russia, located about 23 kilometers southwest of Grozny. Population: 5,195; 4,244. On August 14, 2005, a militant group attacked the village and five officials from the regional military head of Urus-Martanovsky District and Colonel Alexander Kayak were killed and one person was seriously wounded.
