C-3 was built by Sociedad Española de Construcción Naval (SECN) in Cartagena, Spain, launched 20 February 1929, and commissioned on the 4 May 1929. Gibralfaro
Mount Gibralfaro, located in Málaga in southeast Spain, is a hill 130 metres above sea level which has been the site of fortifications since the Phoenician foundation of the city. At the beginning of the 14th century, Yusuf I of the Kingdom of Granada constructed on its top the eponymous castle within the Phoenician enclosure. The name is derived from the Phoenician word for light, Jbel-Faro, meaning "Rock of Light". The castle overlooks the modern city of Málaga and the Mediterranean Sea.
