San Juan de Ortega

The old monastery of San Juan de Ortega is a Romanesque monument in Barrios de Colina, in the province of Burgos, Spain. It is commonly believed that it was built by Saint John of Ortega himself, with the help of his friend and fellow saint, Domingo de la Calzada, as a help point to the pilgrims who walked to Santiago de Compostela along the Way of Saint James. Today, pilgrims are still received in the former monastery.

Cartuja of Miraflores

The Abbey of Cartuja de Miraflores is a monastery of monks located at the south east part of the city of Burgos in Spain. The word miraflores, refers in this case to an area with flowers or nature. It is one of the most important gothic arquitecture edifications of Spain, due to the fact that it was a summer residence of the Spanish monarchy during centuries.

Atapuerca Mountains

The Atapuerca Mountains (Sierra de Atapuerca in Spanish) is an ancient karstic region of Spain, in the province of Burgos and near Atapuerca and Ibeas de Juarros. It contains several caves, where fossils and stone tools of the earliest known Hominins in West Europe have been found, belonging to the species Homo heidelbergensis. The earliest hominids may have dated to 1.2 million years ago, representing the first in Europe.

Battle of Atapuerca

The Battle of Atapuerca was fought in 1 September 1054 at the site of Piedrahita ("standing stone") in the valley of Atapuerca between two brothers, King García Sánchez III of Navarre and King Ferdinand I of Castile. The Castilians won and King García and his favourite Fortún Sánchez were killed in battle. Ferdinand reannexed Navarrese territory he conceded to García 17 years early after his brother's assistance at Pisuerga.
