Cape Palos

Cape Palos (Spanish: Cabo de Palos) is a cape in the Spanish municipality of Cartagena, in the region of Murcia. It is part of a small range of volcanic mounts that form a small peninsula. The Mediterranean islands of Grosa and the group known as the Hormigas Islands are part of this range, as well as the islands in the Mar Menor (“Little Sea”). The name "Palos" is derived from the Latin word palus, meaning lagoon, a reference to the Mar Menor.

La Manga

La Manga, or La Manga del Mar Menor (meaning "The Sandbar of the Minor Sea") is a seaside spit in the Region of Murcia, Spain. The strip is 22 km long and 100 metres wide (average), separating the Mediterranean Sea from the Mar Menor (Minor Sea) lagoon, from Cabo de Palos to the Punta del Mojón. Historically, it was known by the Romans as Palus and later by the Moors as Al Buhayrat Al Qsarand. In the 17th century its name changed to Mar Chico, meaning "small sea" and later as El Mar Menor.

SS Sirio

The SS Sirio was an Italian merchant steamer that sank off the Spanish coast on 4 August 1906, causing the deaths of at least 150 Italian and Spanish emigrants bound for Argentina. The shipwreck gained notoriety because the captain, Giuseppe Piccone, abandoned ship at the first opportunity. The wreck had a profound effect on communities in northern Italy and was remembered in popular songs of the era.

Campo de Cartagena

Campo de Cartagena or Comarca de Cartagena is a comarca in the Region of Murcia, southeastern Spain. The main town is Cartagena, the most important Naval Base of the Spanish Navy in the Mediterranean Sea. The Mar Menor is located at the eastern end of the comarca. An attempt was made during the First Spanish Republic, on July 12 of 1873 to establish a canton in the Cartagena area. The insurgency took the name Cantonal Revolution and in the following days it spread through many other regions.
