Hualien County is the largest county in Taiwan in terms of area, and is located on the mountainous eastern coast of Taiwan. It contains the Port of Hualien. It is the starting point of the Hualien-Taitung Line railroad and the terminal point of North-Link Line of Taiwan Railway Administration. The Port of Hualien is one of the international ports in Hualien County, Taiwan. It is located in Hualien City, facing the Pacific Ocean in the east. It is an artificial harbor build in 1930–1939, protected by breakwaters. There are 25 wharves in Hualien Port. The annual container volume is about 13 million tons. The port mainly transports local gravel, cement, and marble. It also develops tourism and leisure industry, such as cruises and whale-watching boats.
