The magnitude of the earthquake was 6.9 on the surface wave magnitude scale and had a maximum felt intensity of IX (Violent) on the Mercalli intensity scale. The fatalities reached 2,394 and 1,489 people were wounded. The earthquake devastated all the structures in Varto.
