Thomson, Illinois

Thomson is a village along Illinois Route 84 near the Mississippi River in Carroll County, Illinois, United States. The population was 590 at the 2010 census, up from 559 at the 2000 census. Just north of the village is the Thomson Correctional Center, a mostly-unused maximum security state prison. Thomson is known for watermelons, and it has the nickname "Melon Capital of the World."

Thomson Correctional Center

Thomson Correctional Center was an Illinois Department of Corrections maximum security prison located just north of Thomson, Illinois. It has an area of about 146 acres and comprises 15 buildings. The facility is enclosed by a 15-foot, 7000 volt electric fence surrounded by an additional 12-foot exterior fence covered with razor wire. Thomson has eight cellhouses with 1,600 total cells, and an additional minimum-security unit with 200 beds.

Lock and Dam No. 13

Lock and Dam No. 13 is a lock and dam located on the Upper Mississippi River above Fulton, Illinois and Clinton, Iowa, United States. This facility offers visitors a view of the barges and boats locking through on the widest pool in the Upper Mississippi River. The movable portion of the dam is 1,066 feet long and consists of ten tainter gates and three roller gates.

Mark N. Norris Bridge

The Mark N. Morris Bridge (locally called the North Bridge) is a 2 lane automobile truss bridge across the Mississippi River in the United States. It connects the cities of Clinton, Iowa and Fulton, Illinois. (The town of Lyons, Iowa, was annexed to Clinton in 1895, but the north end of the city is still referred to as Lyons; hence the name Lyons-Fulton Bridge). The bridge is the terminus of both Iowa Highway 136 and Illinois Route 136.
