Monterey, Louisiana

Monterey is an unincorporated community in Concordia Parish, Louisiana, United States. The community is located near the junction of Louisiana Highways 129 and 565 in west central Concordia Parish, southwest of Ferriday. It is also part of the Natchez, MS–LA Micropolitan Statistical Area. Although it is unincorporated, Monterey has a post office, with the ZIP code of 71354. Public education in the community is provided by Concordia Parish Schools

Battle of Fort De Russy

The Battle of Fort De Russy was part of the Red River Campaign in the American Civil War and took place in Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana. On March 12, 1864, Brigadier General A.J. Smith and Brigadier General Joseph Mower led their men towards Shreveport, Louisiana, which they wanted to capture. The Union troops sailed down Berwick Bay and Bayou Teche with some difficulty because of obstructions Confederate forces placed there.

Marksville, Louisiana

Marksville is a city in and the parish seat of Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 5,702 at the 2010 census, an increase of 165 over the 2000 tabulation of 5,537. It is 43 percent African American. Louisiana's first land-based casino, Paragon Casino Resort, opened in Marksville in June 1994. It is operated by the Tunica-Biloxi tribe.
